January In Wisconsin (1/13/05)
This was shot less than a block from my house. There's a bridge that goes through this town which goes over the Fox River. I live near the top of that bridge. This was shot at the bottom of it, on the way back from the grocery store. When I saw this sunset, I had to pull over and grab the shot. The Fox River is a beautiful body of water. It's interesting to watch it throughout the year. In the spring, it always looks as if it's going to overflow. In the summer, it's a busy attraction for waterskiers, fishermen, and people cruising along in their boats. In the fall, its a wonderful mirror for the brilliant colors that the trees embody for those few weeks that always feel too short. In the winter, just like everything else, the river tends to slow down, become equally as lethargic as the rest of the nature, many times, freezing completely over during the coldest part of the season. To me, this shot captures the slowing down of nature, the extreme cold of January in Wisconsin, and those beautiful fleeting moments of a winter sunset. |
