The Terrace (8/93)
Shot in August of 1993 in Madison, WI, at one of my favorite places on earth, the Memorial Union Terrace. I've spent many hours, as just about every other person who went to school there, just hanging out at the Terrace on Lake Mendota, hanging out with friends, drinking beer, and once in a while, even studying. This photo was shot on a weekend when my sister came down to visit. It was one of those shots that I just happened to have my camera with me, saw the shot, and snapped it, without a lot of set up, framing, or contemplation. For me, my best pictures just happen. I love how the shadows in this shot reveal a small diagonal slice of the brilliant sunset.

I always remember my photography professor turning his nose up at sunsets, landscapes, and photos of animals and children..pretty much everything I shoot to this day. Funny, how the definition of art lies in the eyes of the beholder.
